Macquarie Commits Up to $5 Billion in Applied Digital’s AI Data Centers
In a major boost to the artificial intelligence sector, Australian investment giant Macquarie Group has agreed to take a 15%
San Francisco-based AI startup Anthropic is reportedly on the verge of securing an additional $2 billion in funding, pushing its valuation to a staggering $60 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. The funding round, spearheaded by Lightspeed Venture Partners, underscores the accelerating competition in the generative AI space as companies race to establish dominance.
Anthropic’s valuation has soared in just over a year. The company was valued at approximately $18 billion in a funding round led by Menlo Ventures in 2023. The latest $2 billion influx forms part of a $6 billion funding wave, following Anthropic's $4 billion funding from Amazon earlier this year. Notably, Amazon's investment, made through convertible notes, will be converted into equity during this round, further strengthening its partnership with Anthropic.
Amazon, which has invested $8 billion into the startup, is betting on Anthropic to bolster its competitive position against tech giants like Microsoft and Google in the generative AI arms race.
Anthropic specializes in developing large language models, a field that demands extensive computational resources and top-tier talent. The company has reportedly achieved annualized revenues of $875 million by offering access to its models directly and via third-party platforms, including Amazon Web Services. However, such ambitious development requires continuous financial support, as evidenced by Anthropic's pursuit of outsized funding rounds.
Anthropic’s rise is notable for its leadership by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei, both former OpenAI executives. Their vision positions the company as a key rival to Microsoft-backed OpenAI, whose success with ChatGPT has set the pace in the industry. OpenAI recently raised $6.6 billion in funding, pushing its valuation to a jaw-dropping $157 billion.
Anthropic is not alone in its quest for dominance. Alphabet invested $2 billion in the company in 2023, further solidifying its place among AI’s biggest backers. Meanwhile, the AI sector has drawn nearly half of all venture capital raised in the United States last year, according to PitchBook data. Startups such as Anthropic and Elon Musk’s xAI have contributed significantly to this trend, reflecting the immense investor interest in the transformative potential of artificial intelligence.
As competition intensifies, Anthropic’s latest funding marks another milestone in the evolving AI landscape, setting the stage for further innovations and market disruption in the months to come.
